Nestled along the picturesque Douro River in northern Portugal, Porto is a city brimming with charm, history, and culture. From its iconic bridges to its colourful neighbourhoods and delicious cuisine, Porto is a beautiful place to visit, and definitely one of my favourite trips from this year (so far!).
I love Portugal, from visiting Lisbon a few years back to now visiting Porto, these are my top things to do and see in Porto.
1. Explore the Ribeira District
No visit to Porto is complete without a stroll through the historic Ribeira district. With its narrow cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, street performers, and lively atmosphere, Ribeira is the heart and soul of the city. Take a walk along the riverfront, with the stunning views of the Douro River, and iconic Dom Luís I Bridge towering above.
2. Walk Luis I Bridge
Experience Porto from new heights by crossing the iconic Luis I Bridge. Marvel at its intricate ironwork and breathtaking views of the Douro River below as you go on a picturesque stroll between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. Once you get to Gaia, you can explore a monastery which also provides beautiful views of Porto as well as a hill to watch the sunset on!
3. Discover Chapel of Souls
If you're into photography, Chapel of Souls is a great photo spot in Porto. Adorned with stunning azulejo tile-work depicting scenes from local life and religious iconography, this is an artsy spot you shouldn't miss when you visit Porto if you want those blue Porto pics!
4. Explore Porto Cathedral
Journey back in time as you explore Porto Cathedral, a magnificent medieval masterpiece perched atop the city's highest point. I loved the inner architecture (also a great photo spot in Porto!), you can also climb the tower and soak in panoramic views.
5. Indulge in Porto's Culinary Delights
No visit to Porto is complete without savouring the rich and diverse flavours of Portuguese cuisine. From fresh seafood to sweet pastries and creamy cheeses, Porto offers a wide array of culinary delights to satisfy every palate. Be sure to sample local specialties such as the iconic Francesinha—a dish layered with various meats, smothered in a rich beer sauce, and topped with melted cheese—and indulge in the irresistible sweetness of Pastel de Nata (my absolute favourite!), a custard tart that will leave you craving for more.
6. Stay at Hotel One Shot Palácio Cedofeita
Elevate your Porto getaway with a stay at the luxurious Hotel One Shot Palácio Cedofeita. Immerse yourself in timeless elegance, impeccable service, and modern comfort as you create unforgettable memories in the heart of the city. The hotel has a beautiful grounds and omg the breakfast dining hall was breathtaking, just see below😍

7. Relax in Jardins do Palácio de Cristal
Escape the urban hustle and bustle in the serene oasis of Jardins do Palácio de Cristal. Explore the lush greenery, fragrant blooms, and tranquil pathways as you unwind amidst the natural beauty of Porto's most beloved gardens.
8. Taste Port Wine at Cellars
Embark on a journey of the senses as you indulge in Portugal's most cherished export: Port wine. You can either enjoy port wine with your meals, or explore the historic wine cellars of Vila Nova de Gaia, where you can learn about the rich heritage of Port production, and savour the complex flavours of this world-renowned beverage.
9. Marvel at São Bento Station
Step into a world of timeless beauty at São Bento Train Station. Admire its breathtaking azulejo tile panels, which depict scenes from Portugal's illustrious history, and enjoy the most artsy train station!
10. Climb Torre dos Clérigos
Reach new heights and behold panoramic vistas of Porto from atop the Torre dos Clérigos. Ascend its spiral staircase, feel the pulse of the city beneath your feet, and immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring beauty of Porto's skyline.
11. Get a relaxing massage
Porto is a city best explored on foot – I walked around 14KM each day! To unwind after all that walking, consider scheduling a massage for the end of your trip. I booked a session with deBest Massage Spa, and it truly lived up to its name. The experience was exceptional, highly professional, and a perfect, relaxing conclusion to our Porto adventure.
From its historic landmarks to its vibrant culture and mouthwatering cuisine, Porto is a city that captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression on all who visit. Whether you're exploring its cobblestone streets, sipping port wine by the river, or admiring its stunning architecture, Porto is sure to enchant you with its beauty and charm.
