Stockholm is a vibrant city that combines rich history with modern charm, spread across multiple islands. Did you know Stockholm's archipelago has over 30,000 islands! Whether you’re drawn to charming architecture, trendy neighbourhoods, or serene islands, Stockholm offers countless ways to experience its magic.
I recently visited Stockholm with my mom as a girl's trip and it was loads of fun! Stockholm easily become one of our favourite European cities!
Here’s a roundup of the top things to do in Stockholm. Enjoy reading!
1. Explore Gamla Stan (Old Town)
Start your journey in Gamla Stan, Stockholm's charming Old Town, known for its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and colourful ambiance. Stortorget Square, with its iconic pastel-colored facades, is the city’s oldest square and a perfect spot for photos.
While you're there visit the Royal Palace, where you can watch the changing of the guard, and the Nobel Museum to learn about Nobel Prize history.
Pro Tip: Grab a coffee and a “kanelbulle” (Swedish cinnamon bun) at a café for a classic Swedish fika experience.
2. Take a Scenic Boat Tour with Stockholm by Boat
Discover Stockholm’s beauty from the water with Stockholm By Boat, offering a variety of private charters that let you experience the city in style. Choose your ideal adventure: whether it’s a classic motorboat, a picturesque sailboat, a luxurious yacht, or an adrenaline-pumping RIB boat, there’s an option for every kind of traveler. Tours range from 2, 4, to 6-hour excursions, allowing you to explore Stockholm’s historic waterways or venture further out into the stunning archipelago.
Each tour is guided by an expert who shares captivating stories, historical insights, and fun facts about Stockholm and its surroundings. For our tour we had Patric, he was the best!
We had such a great time and it was probably the highlight of the trip!
Pro Tip: It's magical seeing Stockholm from the water - make sure to take lots of pics! 😍
3. Discover Djurgården Island
For a nature-filled escape, visit Djurgården Island, a favorite among locals and tourists alike. This lush island is home to popular attractions like The Vasa Museum, a fascinating maritime museum centered around the remarkably preserved 17th-century warship, Vasa, which sank on its maiden voyage and was salvaged over 300 years later, offering visitors a unique glimpse into Sweden's maritime history. Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum, and Gröna Lund amusement park. Djurgården also offers peaceful walking trails, perfect for a leisurely day outdoors.
This was a great spot for me to fly my drone! Some stunning drone footage will be up on my Instagram @Ela_Kir soon - stay tuned!
Pro Tip: Take a break and enjoy the stunning views of Stockholm’s waterfront.
4. Stroll through Södermalm
Södermalm, Stockholm’s bohemian neighborhood, is a must-visit for its vibrant arts scene, unique boutiques, and trendy cafés. Don’t miss the Monteliusvägen viewpoint for panoramic views of Stockholm, especially beautiful at sunset.
Pro Tip: Make sure to explore this area on foot - we found so many cute streets and stores while exploring.
5. Dinner at Canta Lola: A Taste of Peruvian Passion
End your day with an unforgettable dinner at Canta Lola, a warm and vibrant Latin American oasis right in the heart of Stockholm. Owned and run by the talented Erika Goytizolo, this restaurant is more than a dining spot — it’s a heartfelt tribute to Peru’s rich culinary heritage. Erika, who brings her own family memories and Peruvian roots into every dish, combines locally-sourced produce with authentic Peruvian ingredients to recreate the traditional flavors she grew up with.
The menu offers a fresh take on classic Peruvian dishes, from beautifully plated ceviches to delicious tamales. When you dine here, don’t miss the chance to chat with Erika — her warm welcome and deep knowledge of Peruvian cuisine make the experience extra special.
This was one of my favourite ever dining experiences and if you find yourself in Stockholm it's a spot that should not be missed. Beautiful restaurant with a great atmosphere and absolutely delicious food and drinks!
Pro Tip: Be sure to try multiple items from their menu paired with one of their specialty cocktails for a true taste of Peru in Stockholm.😍
Stockholm’s charm lies in its blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the cobbled streets of Gamla Stan to the green expanses of Djurgården, each part of the city offers something new to discover.
While in Stockholm also make sure to try delicious local dishes such as Swedish meatballs and Kroppkakor (Swedish dumplings - I LOVED this!).
It was definitely one of my fave trips so far, I had such an amazing time with my mom and we both loved exploring the beautiful city🥰
